Rebuilding a National Bank for the Digital Generation
Next.js Platform · Brand Transition · UX Architecture
Kilimanjaro Co-Operative Bank Limited — one of Tanzania's oldest cooperative financial institutions — rebranded as Cooperative Bank of Tanzania and commissioned Sakura Group to lead the full digital rebuild. This was not a refresh. It was a ground-up rethink of how a national bank presents itself online: faster, clearer, and built for a customer base that increasingly starts on mobile.
A bank serving farmers in Kilimanjaro, traders in Dar es Salaam, NGOs across 8 regions, and a growing base of digitally-native young professionals — all on one platform. The new site had to hold 14+ account types, 7+ loan products, real-time forex, a bilingual-ready architecture, regulatory compliance sections, a careers portal, and deep integration with mobile banking — while loading fast on 3G connections in regional towns.
Rebuilt entirely on Next.js 15 — static generation for speed, server components for dynamic data like forex rates and job listings
Designed a new visual language that carries CoopBank's green brand equity forward while feeling national, modern, and trustworthy
Structured the information architecture around customer journeys — Personal, Business, Digital Banking, and Institutional — not internal org charts
Built custom page templates for 14+ account products and 7+ loan types, each optimised for discovery and conversion
Integrated BOT-compliant regulatory sections: whistleblower module, annual reports, tender notices
Optimised for low-bandwidth performance — critical for reaching the bank's rural and semi-urban customer base across Tanzania
Domain and hosting infrastructure managed under Sakurahost SLA with uptime monitoring
